Born in Sydney in 1947, Terry Dowling is one of Australia\u2019s most awarded, versatile and internationally acclaimed writers of science fiction, fantasy, dark fantasy and horror. He is author of Rynosseros<\/em> (1990), Blue Tyson<\/em> (1992), Twilight Beach<\/em> (1993) and Rynemonn <\/em>(2007) (the Ditmar award-winning Tom Rynosseros saga, which, in his 2002 Fantastic Fictions Symposium keynote speech, US Professor Brian Attebery called \u201cnot only intricate and engaging, but important as well\u201d), Wormwood <\/em>(1991), The Man Who Lost Red<\/em> (1994), An Intimate Knowledge of the Night<\/em> (1995), Antique Futures: The Best of Terry Dowling<\/em> (1999), Blackwater Days<\/em> (2000), Basic Black: Tales of Appropriate Fear<\/em> (2006, Ticonderoga edition 2009) (which earned a starred review in Publishers\u2019 Weekly in May 2006 and won the 2007 International Horror Guild Award for Best Collection) and Make Believe<\/em>. He is editor of the World Fantasy Award-winning The Essential Ellison<\/em> (1987\/ revised 2001), Mortal Fire: Best Australian SF<\/em> (1993) and The Jack Vance Treasury<\/em> (2007).<\/p>\n

Dowling has outstanding publishing credentials. As well as appearances in The Year\u2019s Best Science Fiction<\/em>, The Year\u2019s Best SF<\/em>, The Mammoth Book of Best New SF<\/em>, The Year\u2019s Best Fantasy<\/em>, The Best New Horror<\/em> and The Year\u2019s Best Fantasy and Horror<\/em> (a record eight times; he is the only author to have had two stories in the 2001 volume, one chosen by each editor), his work has appeared in such major anthologies as Centaurus: The Best of Australian Science Fiction<\/em>, The Dark<\/em>, Dreaming Down Under<\/em>, Gathering the Bones<\/em> and The Oxford Book of Australian Ghost Stories<\/em> and in such diverse publications as SciFiction<\/em>, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction<\/em>, Interzone<\/em>, Oceans of the Mind<\/em>, T\u00e9n\u00e8bres<\/em>, Ikarie<\/em>, Japan\u2019s SF <\/em>and Russia\u2019s Game.Exe<\/em>. His fiction has been translated into many languages and has been used in a course in forensic psychology in the US.<\/p>\n

Terry has also written and co-designed three best-selling computer adventures: Schizm: Mysterious Journey<\/em> (2001) (aka US Mysterious Journey: Schizm<\/em>) (www.schizm.com\/schizm1\/), Schizm II: Chameleon<\/em> (2003) (aka US Mysterious Journey II: Chameleon<\/em>) (www.schizm2.info) and Sentinel: Descendants in Time<\/em> (2004) (aka Realms of Illusion<\/em>) (www.dormeuse.info) (based on his 1996 short story, \u201cThe Ichneumon and the Dormeuse\u201d), which have been published in many foreign language editions. He has reviewed for The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em> and The Bulletin<\/em>, and was the science fiction, fantasy and horror reviewer for The Weekend Australian<\/em> for nineteen years under four different literary editors: Barry Oakley, James Hall, Murray Waldren and Deborah Hope.<\/p>\n

Terry holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Western Australia (the first such degree to be granted and completed at that university), an MA (Hons) in English Literature and a BA (Hons) in English Literature, Archaeology and Ancient History, both from the University of Sydney. He has won many Ditmar and Aurealis Awards for his fiction, as well as the William Atheling Jr Award for his critical work. His first computer adventure won the Grand Prix at Utopiales in France in 2001 and he has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award twice.<\/p>\n

The multi award-winning US magazine Locus <\/em>regarded Terry\u2019s first book Rynosseros as placing him \u201camong the masters of the field\u201d (August 1990). In The Year\u2019s Best Science Fiction<\/em> 21 (reprinting Terry\u2019s story \u201cFlashmen\u201d), twelve-time Hugo Award winning US editor Gardner Dozois called him: \u201cOne of the best-known and most celebrated of Australian writers in any genre\u201d, while in the Year\u2019s Best Fantasy<\/em> 4 (reprinting \u201cOne Thing About the Night\u201d), editors David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer described him as a \u201cmaster craftsman\u201d and \u201cone of the best prose stylists in science fiction and fantasy.\u201d Terry has also been called \u201cAustralia\u2019s finest writer of horror\u201d by Locus <\/em>magazine, and \u201cAustralia\u2019s premier writer of dark fantasy\u201d by All Hallows<\/em> (February 2004).
